Dr. Tawfik Hamid on the True Cause of Palestinian Suffering

Dr. Tawfik Hamid,  Sr. Fellow & Chair for the Study of Islamic Radicalism, Potomac Inst. for Policy Studies, speaks on the true cause of Palestinian suffering. His thesis is that the Palestinians' suffering is caused not by Israel but by Palestinian leadership, driven by a deep hatred toward Israel and Jews. I think that it is far from plausible that Hamas or, for that matter, Fatah will abandon their enmity toward the Jewish State. The Israeli scapegoat has provided a convenient diversion of their peoples' discontent for too long. And the rising Islamist animus all across the Arab world today portends poorly for increased acceptance of partnership with Jews. But I agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Hamid that if such a change could occur within the Palestinian leadership, peace might be achieved quickly.

The English text below was translated from the Hebrew captions:

Yes, you ask me what I think about the Palestinians and their situation today. I have no doubt that the Palestinians are suffering and I do not disagree with this.
But what is the cause of their suffering?
It is not Israel, but Hamas. If Hamas would say tomorrow "We accept the existence of the State of Israel. We will not carry out any more terror attacks against them
and we will accept the previous agreements and the things to which we have committed ourselves", the Palestinians' suffering would come to an end.
So who is to blame for the situation? I am not saying that they don't suffer. Everyone knows that they are suffering. But what is the cause of their suffering? Is it Israel? A million Israeli Arabs live in Israel with the Jews, and they are not suffering like the Arabs who actually are ruled by Arabs.
So now we are dealing with a situation where you cannot deny the suffering but if you want to be sincere and honest you have to say that the Palestinians' suffering is because of their leadership and the bad decisions made by leaders such as Hamas, not because of Israel. The moment that their leadership ends its arrogance and its barbaric attitude toward Jews things will change and you will not see one Palestinian suffering there.
So I think that the solution is in the hands of the Palestinians today. They must decide to put an end to the suffering of their people, by extending their hand in peace to the Israelis. Do you remember President Sadat? President Sadat wanted to get Sinai back.
He extended his hand in peace and love to the Israelis and he achieved the return of Sinai. But the Palestinians did not do this. Hamas only wants to kill all the Jews, they promote this idea. I ask them to put an end to this and extend a hand in peace to the Israelis. If they try it one time and are sincere about it they will see the results. I was in Israel twice and I tell you, Jews do not hate the Arabs. We are the ones who are causing the problem and we must change
